S26 Calgary Flames Prospects: A Glimpse into the Future [WB6]

By Mike Hopkins (FLAMES) On Monday 18th March 2024 / 7:39pm

As the Calgary Flames continue to build for the future, the spotlight shines on their prospect pool, which offers a mix of potential and promise. While some prospects are already making waves in the VHL, others are honing their skills in junior leagues and AHL affiliates, eager to make their mark on the professional stage.

Junior Prospects:

The Flames boast a crop of junior prospects, albeit not with the pedigree to "blow your socks off." Comprising later picks, these players are viewed as projects requiring significant development. While one or two may emerge as bottom-six depth players adept at penalty killing, the majority are projected to be middle-of-the-pack contributors in the farm system at best.

Young NHL Talent:

In contrast, Calgary's young NHL talents are already making significant contributions at the highest level. Elias Lindholm, just 21 years old, has seamlessly transitioned into a key role, anchoring the Flames' third line and showcasing his versatility on the penalty kill. With 11 goals and 28 points to his name this season, Lindholm is proving to be a valuable asset for Calgary's forward corps.

Similarly, 21-year-old Hampus Lindholm is making waves in his first full NHL season. Despite slotting in as a third-line defenseman, Lindholm has excelled, tallying 21 points and an impressive +15 rating in 71 games. His chemistry with Tyler Myers on the top power-play unit highlights his potential to become a cornerstone on the Flames' blue line for years to come.

Prospects in Salt Lake:

Meanwhile, the Flames' AHL affiliate in Salt Lake City serves as a breeding ground for young talent on the cusp of NHL readiness. Among the standout prospects are 20-year-olds Brayden Point and Jonathan Drouin, who have emerged as the cream of the crop in Utah. Together, they've amassed an impressive 51 goals, signaling their readiness to make the leap to the NHL in the near future.

As the Flames' organization continues to nurture and develop its prospects, the future looks bright in Calgary. With a blend of youthful exuberance and veteran leadership, the team is poised to compete at the highest level for years to come. Whether it's prospects making their mark in junior leagues, AHL standouts knocking on the door of VHL stardom, or young talents already making waves in the big leagues, the Flames' pipeline is brimming with potential and promise.

As fans eagerly await the next wave of talent to emerge from the Flames' system, one thing is certain: the future is bright in Calgary, and the best is yet to come.

S26 : Analyzing the New Player Re-Signing System: A By-the-Numbers Overview [WB9]

By Mike Hopkins (FLAMES) On Monday 18th March 2024 / 6:56pm

The VHL season is a flurry of activity as teams strategize and negotiate contracts with their players. With the introduction of a new player re-signing system, clubs are navigating this process with a heightened sense of precision and calculation. Let's delve into the numbers behind this new system to gain insights into its impact so far.

Goalies:

Out of 16 offers extended to goalies, 4 contracts have been signed, representing a 25% success rate. However, it's noteworthy that 2 goalies have rejected all 3 offers and are set to become unrestricted free agents (UFA). This rejection rate amounts to 12.5% of the total offers made to goalies.

Wingers:

Wingers have seen a higher success rate in contract negotiations, with 36 contracts signed out of 79 offers, equating to a success rate of approximately 45%. Notably, only one winger has declined all 3 offers and opted for UFA status. This rejection accounts for just over 1% of the total offers made to wingers.

Additionally, one savvy general manager (GM) successfully utilized the "pick a number" option, securing a 15% discount on a winger's contract.

Defensemen:

Among defensemen, 31 contracts have been signed out of 63 offers, translating to a success rate of around 49%. Similar to wingers, only one defenseman has rejected all 3 offers, constituting roughly 1.6% of the total offers made to defensemen.

Similarly, a GM capitalized on the "pick a number" feature, earning a 15% discount on a defenseman's contract.

Centers:

Centers have seen 26 contracts signed out of 70 offers, resulting in a success rate of approximately 37%. However, a larger proportion of centers, 5 in total, have declined all 3 offers and are heading towards UFA status. This rejection rate represents approximately 7.1% of the total offers made to centers.

In summary, while the success rates vary across positions, it's evident that the new re-signing system has some flaws, particularly in the rejection rates for certain positions. I am curious how GM’s in the league find the system as they do not get the same info they received in the old portal. Teams are navigating these challenges, with some GMs leveraging the "pick a number" option to secure discounts on player contracts.

Moving forward, it will be intriguing to observe how teams adapt their negotiation tactics in response to the system's shortcomings. As the offseason progresses, the impact of these adjustments on roster composition and team dynamics will become increasingly apparent, shaping the landscape of the VHL for the upcoming season.

S26 Calgary Flames: A Contender for Award Hardware [WB8]

By Mike Hopkins (FLAMES) On Monday 18th March 2024 / 6:12pm

As the VHL regular season nears its conclusion, the Calgary Flames find themselves in a prime position, not only in the standings but also in the race for individual awards. With standout performances from several key players, the Flames are emerging as contenders for coveted hardware at the league level.

Leading the charge are dynamic duo Jeff Skinner and Nazem Kadri, whose offensive prowess has been instrumental in Calgary's success this season. Since the start of the campaign, Skinner and Kadri have been consistently among the top scorers in the league. While they experienced a brief lull in the middle of the season, their recent resurgence has been nothing short of spectacular.

Skinner, in particular, has been a force to be reckoned with, currently leading the NHL in both goals and points. His lethal scoring touch and playmaking ability have propelled him to the top of the scoring charts, making him a front-runner for prestigious individual honors. Meanwhile, Kadri, not far behind in the points race, has been a formidable offensive presence in his own right, providing valuable support alongside Skinner on the Flames' top line.

The dynamic tandem of Skinner and Kadri has been a driving force behind Calgary's ascent to fourth place overall in the Virtual Hockey League (VHL). Their offensive firepower has bolstered the Flames' attack and played a pivotal role in the team's success throughout the season.

In addition to their dynamic forward duo, goaltender Frederik Andersen has emerged as a stalwart between the pipes for the Flames. Andersen's stellar play has been a cornerstone of Calgary's defensive efforts, earning him recognition as one of the top netminders in the league. Currently leading the VHL in wins and boasting an impressive goals-against average (GAA), Andersen is firmly in contention for multiple goaltending awards this season.

With Skinner and Kadri leading the charge up front and Andersen standing tall in the crease, the Flames are poised to make a deep postseason run. Their collective contributions have not only propelled Calgary into contention for the VHL championship but have also positioned individual players for recognition on the awards stage.

As the regular season draws to a close, all eyes will be on the Flames' star players as they vie for league-wide recognition. Whether it's Skinner and Kadri lighting up the scoreboard or Andersen shutting down opposing offenses, Calgary's talented roster is primed to leave a lasting impression on the VHL landscape.

As the playoffs loom on the horizon, the Flames will look to harness the momentum generated by their standout performers and continue their pursuit of championship glory. With Skinner, Kadri, Andersen, and company leading the way, the Flames are well-equipped to make a splash on both the team and individual fronts in the quest for VHL supremacy.

S26 A Quiet Deadline Day: Calgary Flames Stand Pat Despite Search for Left Wing Upgrade [WB10]

By Mike Hopkins (FLAMES) On Monday 18th March 2024 / 5:56pm

The VHL trade deadline often sparks frenzied activity as teams jockey for position and make last-minute adjustments to bolster their rosters for the playoff push. However, this season saw a remarkably subdued deadline day league-wide, with only three trades executed. Among the teams standing pat were the Calgary Flames, who had their sights set on enhancing their lineup but ultimately opted to stick with the squad they began the season with.

One area of focus for the Flames leading up to the deadline was securing an upgrade at the third-line left wing position. General Manager Mike Hopkins and the Flames' front office had identified specific players they believed could provide the necessary boost to the team's forward depth. However, their pursuit encountered several obstacles along the way.

Despite their efforts, the Flames found themselves unable to strike a deal for their targeted players. Some were simply unavailable, likely deemed untouchable by their respective teams. In other cases, inquiries went unanswered, leaving Calgary in limbo regarding potential trade discussions. Additionally, negotiations with certain teams failed to materialize into mutually beneficial deals, preventing the Flames from making the desired upgrades.

As a result, the Flames opted to maintain the status quo and finish the season with the roster they had assembled at the beginning of the campaign. While this decision may have left some fans disappointed, there is optimism within the organization regarding potential reinforcements from within.

Rumors have circulated suggesting that come playoff time, the Flames may look to promote one or two young players from their farm system to provide a spark and bolster depth scoring. Promising prospects within the Flames' pipeline could be given the opportunity to make an impact at the NHL level, injecting fresh energy and enthusiasm into the lineup during the crucial postseason stretch.

The decision to forego making any deadline day moves reflects the Flames' confidence in the current roster's abilities while also acknowledging the importance of continuity and chemistry heading into the playoffs. Rather than making changes for the sake of change, Calgary opted for stability, trusting in the collective talent and cohesion of their players to carry them through the postseason.

Looking ahead, the Flames remain focused on their ultimate goal of contending for the Stanley Cup. While the trade deadline may have come and gone without any significant roster alterations, the team's commitment to success remains unwavering. With the playoffs on the horizon, the Flames will rely on their existing strengths and the potential contributions of emerging talent to fuel their pursuit of hockey's ultimate prize.
