The win puts a three-point cushion between themselves and the Montreal Canadiens for the eighth and final playoff spot. Despite that, the Canucks were picked by many to be bonafide Stanley Cup contenders and thus far have been closer to mid than elite. A slow start to a season that came with such high hopes, Van-City is going to need to right the ship, and fast if they want to compete.

For head coach Anatoly Tarasov, thankfully he feels there’s really only one glaring issue. Unfortunately, it’s a rather big one.

“The defence has been bad, we’re at or damn near the bottom of the league in goals against. That’s not just on the goalies either. As a team, we’re not playing defensively sound,”
Tarasov told reporters prior to Monday's win. “That’s a big part of our problem i’d say.”

The up-and-down campaign has featured a 1-3 start, followed by a 9-1 run over the next 10 games. Things looked good. Then came the most recent 2-8 stretch before last night’s win.

“We’ve been consistently bad the last 10 games,” Tarasov said.

One thing working for the Canucks early on is the struggles of just about every team in the league not named the Pittsburgh Penguins or the Toronto Maple Leafs. As it stands, Vancouver is one point out of fourth and five points back of the third place Boston Bruins.

The slow start would've figured to put them in a deep hole given the historic competitiveness of the league, but despite the slow start they sit four points up on ninth place Detroit and a potential spot in the post-season.

As the Vancouver Canucks continue training camp before the start of the regular season, there is reason to be optimistic about the team.

Coming into the season 43 campaign, the Canucks are hoping to bounce back following a disappointing loss in the Stanley Cup final. Vancouver is a franchise that prides themselves on being competitive, but after heartbreaking playoff runs the last two years they will be seeking to snap that streak.

This offseason, the team made moves both for season 43 and beyond, with a bit more of their focus going toward the future. Due to them having a mid-level payroll (8th), having a strong farm system and players under control at somewhat reasonable numbers is key to their success.

With puck drop right around the corner, the team will be hoping to get off to a good start and set the tone for a successful campaign. In order to do that, they will be relying on some of their young talent to continue to develop and make an impact. Fortunately, the team does have some exciting young players on the roster.

As the team looks to snap back from two difficult playoff exits, it will undoubtedly be the youth on the team that will have to carry them. While they do have some talented veterans, young players improving and stepping up will be key.

Firstly, the play of potential star Kelly Kisio for the team is going to be key. The 22-year-old is coming off of a productive rookie season in which he scored 11 times while adding 34 points in 53 games.

Furthermore, while Kisio is becoming a star, he is going to need some help around him. Insert Slovak National Anton Stastny who is certainly a player to keep an eye on in season 43. The 22-year-old is coming off a season in which he scored 36 times while adding 75 points in the American Hockey League with the Birmingham Bulls. The Vancouver Canucks are hopeful that together, they have the ability to make a massive impact on this season’s success.

The Youth Movement: Hanlon and Fuhr
At 24, Glen Hanlon was supposed to be the undisputed successor in the crease, but his "failure to launch" last season has created a massive crisis of confidence. He wasn't terrible by any means going 12-12-4 in his 28 starts, but he was a far cry from from last season or the season before when he went a combined 37-19-4. Banking the season on a bounce-back from Hanlon is a gamble, especially when his backup is the 19-year-old Grant Fuhr. While Fuhr is clearly the goalie of the future, throwing a teenager into a high-pressure starter's role—or tandeming him with a struggling Hanlon—could shatter the confidence of both "kids" before the season even hits the mid-way point.

The "Tony-O" Factor
The blockbuster trade that sent Darcy Rota and Bill Gilligan to the Windy City was designed to bring veteran stability to Detroit a season ago. Now, the question is whether a reunion with Tony Esposito is once again the missing piece. Bringing "Tony-O" back into the fold offers more than just saves; it provides a legendary mentor for Fuhr and a safety net for Hanlon. However, at this stage of his career, is Esposito still capable of a 60-game workload, or would he simply be a high-priced insurance policy?
